Botox Cream: Topical Botox and Other Topical Cream Solutions

If you're not convinced that injections are for you, a topical Botox cream may be the solution. Technically, Botox needs to be injected, but there are topical alternatives that can relax muscles and produce great results without the potentially damaging side effects of Botox.

To learn more about topical Botox cream alternatives like Portlaca oleracea, Acetyl-Hexapeptide 3 and Gamma Aminobutyric Acid, keep reading for a rundown of these common ingredients and the over-the-counter products where you can find them.

Portulaca Oleracea

Portulaca oleracea is a plant extract that can be found in products like Avon's Bo-Hylurox. Its analgesic and anti-inflammatory properties help relax facial muscles, take down swelling and reduce the appearance of fine lines and wrinkles. It does not, however, actually “freeze” muscles in the face.

Portulaca oleracea is also known as verdolaga, little hogweed, pusley purslane and pigweed. It's also used to treat constipation or urinary tract infections and it can be eaten.

Argireline or Acetyl-Hexapeptide-3

Argireline is a synthetically derived peptide available from retailers like Centerchem (http://centerchem.com) and over-the-counter products like Wrinkle Relax, Elizabeth Arden Ceramide Plump Perfect Targeted Line Concentrate or Faux-Tox.

The chemical argireline relaxes your facial tension and can reduce the appearance of lines while also reducing your likelihood of worsening, developing wrinkles. Argireline has not been certified as effective in an independent research study.

GABA or Gamma Aminobutyric Acid

GABA is technically an amino acid and is typically used to treat depression and reduce seizures. Basically, the product limits the speed at which nerves in the brain activate – it's a neurotransmitter inhibitor – when taken orally. The idea is that this inhibitor would also freeze or limit the muscles and nerves in your face.

GABA can be found in products like Crease Release, EyeCicles and Freeze 24/7 Botox cream. Because GABA has been reported to increase the instance of the Human Growth Hormone in people taking it, it's also used in other beauty products that claim to increase hair growth, build stronger nails or reduce menopausal symptoms.
